PRECIOUS

The title of the movie we watched this time is entitled Precious. She was expelled from her school due to her pregnancy. Her junior high school principal arranges to have her attend an alternative school, which she hopes can help Precious change her life's direction. Precious is determines to change her life because she do not like the life she is having with her mother. She felt all the pain and difficulties at home and also the environment. The teacher in the alternative school, Miss Blu Rain helps her to learn to read. Precious in the end learns how to read and write. The movies ends with Precious determined to take care of her two children in a very young age. It is a sad story yet tells the audience that no matter how hard life is, there is always a way to come out from it. Such an interesting story to be watch.

CHALK.

This time it was more of a documentary about some teachers in a school and how they manage their school and students. It gave me some idea of the real teacher teaching in a school. The first person we were introduced to was a History teacher who was struggling to get the students to participate. The teacher never looked confident at the start of the documentary. In order to change, the first teacher learns about class management by reading up books in the library. He overcome the problem by using different method to attract the students attention. In the end he manages to handle the class well.
The second teacher is a Physical Education (PE) teacher who is a lady. She only had one reason to come to school that is to be a dedicated PE teacher. At the end of the documentary, she says that everyone is different and sensitive. She needs to understand other peoples feeling and be tolerant. The third teacher always wants to be famous and in the end he lost in the election. This thing makes him angry. He became selfish. Another person is a lady who is the assistant principal. She was a teacher before she was promoted. She is in a lot pressure. Everyone comes to her when there is a problem. Once, she gets the promotion, she always gets back home late. All the experience that they share to the audience make me think about the real obstacle we face in school. Each and every one of us has weaknesses, but as time goes by, we will change to be a better person. Never give up to improve.

Movie time again.

"Finding Forrester" is a very intelligent movie. It shows a sixteen year old Jamal Wallace (newcomer Rob Brown) and his friends ritually meet at the basketball court every day, releasing their concerns in a sport that frees their minds and invigorates their spirits. While at the very same moment, far above the court through a socially fissile window, the curious eyes of William Forrester (Sean Connery) look on. The boys are keenly aware that he may be watching, but they have no idea who he really is. One night on a dare, Jamal sneaks into the old man's apartment through the partially open window and after a quick exploration of his abode, accidentally leaves behind his backpack; inside rests his notebook full of writings. The next day, his pack is tossed to the street below. But to Jamal's shock, his notebook has been inundated with ink marks, some critical of his writing style, others captivated with the poetic meaning behind Jamal's conjoined words. He returns to the man's apartment (this time in a more practical manner, going to the front door), and asks him if he wouldn't mind offering his opinion on some of his other writings. After overcoming their initial hesitation in allowing each other into their lives, the two strangers finally break down the communication barriers and set the first building blocks of a lasting friendship in place. In my opinion, this movie would be enjoyed by writers. It sure will inspire all the writers out there. However, it is still a good experience to watch this type of movie.

FOLOW THE READER.

The fourth movie we watched entitled ‘Lean On Me’. It’s about how a principal (Morgan Freeman) makes changes to his school because he want the school to be a good and safe place to study. Morgan Freeman was a teacher in that particular school twenty years back and he left because of some issues and the school has become worse since. Morgan Freeman portrays himself as one strict man because he wants everyone to respect him as a principal. As a principal he has the right to change any rules that can help the school to become better. He change the student’s attitude and he give them a better perception towards education. It is a huge responsibility for a principal to manage a school. As a future teacher, we need to give our full commitment towards our job because students need our guide. So let us make some changes.

SPELL IT RIGHT.

We watched the third movie for this subject entitled, ‘Akeelah and the bee’. Inspiring movie showing hard work and passion make everything possible. This is a genuinely sweet and determinedly inspirational family film that features a charming young actress in the title role. It’s about an eleven old girl who has the capability to spell many difficult words. This movie shows that if there is determination there is a way. Akeelah is not interested in joining the spelling because she is afraid to be laugh. Practically the first time we meet Akeelah, she is contemptuously tossing away a flier advertising her school’s spelling bee. Unwilling to be label as a freak she prefers to keep her gift of spelling a secret from the world. However, she has the determination to join the spelling bee because of the support she gets from Dr. Larabee and peoples around her. She faces all the difficulties and try many ways to be good in spelling. I would recommend this movie to the students because it gives good message and lesson. Exciting movie to watch.

INSPIRING MOVIE

We watched the second movie for this subject during tutorial entitled, ‘The Ron Clark Story’. It is based on a true story. The Ron Clark Story follows the inspiring tale of an energetic, creative and idealistic young teacher who leaves his small North Carolina hometown to teach in a New York City public school. Through his passionate use of special rules for his classroom, highly innovative teaching techniques and an undying devotion to his students and helping them cope with their problems, Clark is able to make a remarkable difference in the lives of his students. This movie is a must watch movie especially for all the teachers. This movie inspired me in a way it made me to think of the approach I will use towards my students. As a good teacher, we must find a way to help the students. Nothing can stop us to be a good role model to the students because for some of them, they need our help to be success.

ARRANGE MARRIAGE?

ARRANGE MARRIAGE?

Dr. Jaya gave us an interesting topic to write for the position paper. Arrange marriage. Nowadays there are still family into arrange marriages. What is the proper definition of arranged marriage? An arranged marriage is a marriage that is established before involving oneself in a lengthy courtship, and often involves the arrangement of someone other than the persons getting married. Such marriages are relatively rare, but still numerous in the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia. For me, I will prefer love marriage because we need to know the person deeply. It is a different feeling to choose your own soul mate because we know what we want from the person. However, people have their own right and reason to get involved in arranged marriage. Everyone wants the best for their life.

LESSON OF THE DAY

LESSON OF THE DAY.

Today’s (5th August 2010) tutorial was fun. We had to draw our fable as in comic strip form in a mahjong paper. My group consists of Kirubayini, Naomi, Renuga and myself. Our artist was Kirubayini, the script writers were Renuga and Naomi, and the painter was me. I am not a good painter, but at least I am proud to contribute something for the group. All the groups were given 45 minutes to finish the fable but all of us took about an hour to finish it. It was fun to see all the groups taking their time to create a good piece of work.
Second thing to do is to write an essay of 200 words about traditional literature. We had to write an introduction paragraph, three paragraphs consist of the body and the last paragraph consist the conclusion. It was a nice experience to write an essay. All the group members giving ideas for the essay. We are satisfied enough with our last product because everyone are doing their job well. This tutorial was very educational yet fun.

TASK AND ASSIGNTMENT

Task and assigntment.

Our class today is mostly about the project paper. Dr. Jaya explains to us about the project paper and also tells about our own supervisor for that. I was given Miss Dzeelfa whom I am very familiar with. On week six I need to meet her and discuss about my topic. Talking about the topic, I don’t have any clear topic to think of but I know which area to focus on. Next, we learned about fables. It is interesting to read fables because it always gives moral of the story at the end of it. Dr. Jaya gave us a task to form a group of four and come up with our own fable during tutorial. It is exciting to do because it’s our own fable where we must come up with our own moral of the story. We have two days to think about a fable and do it in a comic strip form in our next tutorial.

COMPETITION DAY

COMPETITION DAY.

Today is our Drowgames knock out. We used our tutorial time last Thursday on 29th July 2010 from 2.30 till 5.30pm to have competition among TESL 7 batch mates. It was held at the resource centre. The competition was among our classmates so it was fun and we could play it till we loose with whoever we are playing with. Our partners were arrange by Amelia and Alicia.
I played for the first time with Fahmi and the sad part is I lost to him. The competition is fun and I enjoy the session. It is good to see everyone was taking part in this game. Everyone needs to have fun in order to avoid stress. I believe this game can give pleasure to students.

Time to be serious.

Time to be serious.

Is it time to think about practical? Yes, it is time for us to be serious and ready to come out and do our teaching practical. Our practical starts next year in six months time. I am nervous, anxious, excited, and scared when I think of practical. Dr. Jaya spoke a lot about practical in class. He said by end of this semester we will know the schools that we will be going to. He also asked us to list down eight names so that we can be together in a house.
Different schools, different teachers, students, managements and facilities. Which is the best school to go to? It’s all depends on our luck. I really hope I’ll get good students and good school that give a pleasant environment for me. The lecturers have told us a lot of stories about the student’s attitude while the trainees are teaching. I will use the story as a guideline for me to avoid some of the problems. We as a teacher trainees are ready to serve. All the best everyone!

Educational outing

Educational outin.

Today we were not having class in our usual classroom because we were asked to visit an exhibition. We were brought to ‘Dewan Besar’ to see the ‘Pameran Reka Cipta dan Inovasi’ which was on for three days (20th-22nd July). Dr. Jaya were involved in it so we are excited to see what is happening there. There were many kind of exhibition. We visited Dr. Jaya’s innovation before leaving the hall.
Dr. Jaya’s innovation was about creating questions for students using particular software created by Dr. Jaya and the team. It was a good experience for me to have the opportunity to look at the many creations done by the students and professors. It is also a good thing to have this kind of exhibition in UPM to expose students about hundreds of innovation that can we done by people. Thumbs up to everyone!

LEARNING IS FUN

LEARNING IS FUN

The first tutorial was in the resource centre. We were instructed to go the website http://drowgames.com to play the game online. This game is fun because we need to click on the answer before a box becomes red and it becomes red within 15 seconds. It is played by two players over the internet but we can only play it if the other player is willing to play. I played for five minutes with my course mate Sharon Soong and I won the game. I felt really excited about the game and it made me addicted to play it again. I feel that this game is suitable for school children from the age of thirteen to fifteen (form 1-3). Learning language is not a fun things to do for most students but introducing language through game will be a lot better then a teacher standing in front of the class and teaching. The questions from this game range from too easy – easy – difficult – too difficult. This will help students to develop their thinking skills. Thanks to Dr. Jaya and his friends for developing such an interesting game.

Universal Music for all....

Universal music

We had our first day of class with Dr. Jaya on Tuesday at 3-4pm. In this class, he asked us to listen to two songs which are quite meaningful to him. The first song we heard is from a singer call by the name of Sain Zahoor Ahmed. The singer is a leading Sufi musician from Pakistan. He emerged as the ‘Best BBC voice of the year 2006’. Sain Zahoor known for his ‘magical’ voice which was known to put his listener to trance. The song lasted for about 8 minutes. I am not really understood the meaning of the song, but it is so pleasant to hear the music. It made us felt calm and peaceful. The second song was Alejandro by Lady Gaga. We didn’t see the video clip but just listened to the song. I liked the music of this song but I do not think it is suitable for the students because the message of the song is not appropriate for the younger generation. The music video received from mixed to positive reviews, with critics complimenting its idea and dark nature. Out of the two songs I preferred to play the first song for my students because it talks about the greatness of God. Spiritual song is good to bring calmness for us.

Mona Lisa’s Smile.

I feel lucky enough to have the chance to watch a great movie in our new semester and thanks to our lecturer and tutors for giving this opportunity. Aspiring storyline is the first thing that comes to my mind when I watch this movie. I never expect that this movie is about an inspiring educator trying to make changes in her student point of view about art and also about life. I thought that this story is only about the life of a school teacher handling a normal classroom. Never come to my mind that the classroom is full of intelligent female students who have the capability of becoming the future leader. The students are very good in their knowledge about art but they do lack of something about their real life. Most of them think that marriage is the next option they take after graduating. This situation happens due to the influence of the society during that era. Thanks to the new art history teacher who really open a new chapter of life for some of the students. I like the fact that women can and should be able to do whatever they want. They do not have to be housewives. They are perfectly capable of being lawyers, teachers, or whatever the heck they want to be. They are smart women, limited by the era in which they grew up. In my point of view, it is good for us as a future teacher to lead our students to find their own field of interest. It is no point if we just give the knowledge without knowing or putting ourselves in their shoes. They need our support and attention. We as a teacher must build their self confidence so that they can feel secure in whatever things they do in life. This movie does inspire me to create some changes in managing and educating my future students.
